Democratic backsliding in Central Europe?

This section is concerned with the danger of backsliding to authorianism or illiberal regimes in the context of Central Europe. Even though the transit to democracy and rule of law in Central Europe has generally been considered a success, recent developments show, that - even in the Visegrad countries - that the values of liberal democracy are not as widely shared as some expected. Is the danger of backsliding a real posiibility? Or has it - perhaps in the Hungarian and Polish case - already begun? How does are these questions connected to recent political crises and the rise of populism? We invite papers both from the area of constitutional law and political science that deal with these and related questions.
