Law and Critique in Central Europe
(Department of Legal Theory)
Critical legal theory is quite a wide-notioned theoretical movement focusing on critique of the status quo of the law and society's power structures originating in the U.S. in 1970s that spread over into Europe. Naturally, during the period of actually existing socialism, Central European legal scholars did not participate in this debate and came to it only during the 1990s and 2000's. We believe that it is important to address and to explore the tools and potentialities that critical legal scholarship has to offer in the specific Central European setting, where the legal and social systems still bear scars from the former authoritarian regime.
